Thursday, May 22, 2014 Special pullout section STUDENT EXCELLENCE Amit Mehta Acton High School Amit is an outstanding Grade 12 student who has made many valuable contri- butions to Acton High School and to the community of Ac- ton. Amit is an avid mem- ber of the music department and plays percussion in both the Concert and Jazz Bands. He is a highly motivated and conscientious Honours stu- dent who excels in academics and always strives for self- improvement. Amit is a longtime member of the Acton Air Cadets and recently was awarded the Peter Stickley Memorial Award as the Top Leadership Cadet in Ontario. Noah MacDonald Christ the King Catholic Secondary School Noah is a positive and outgoing student with a strong commitment to Catholic leadership through a wide variety of extracurricular activities including Student Council, the Student Liturgical Team and CtK Mentor Pro- gram. Noah looks forward to becoming a teacher and sharing both his faith and experience with stu- dents in the future. Students representing each of the Halton District School Board's elementary and secondary schools were honoured at the 30th annual Celebration of Student Excellence on May 8. Students are recognized for demonstrating out- standing qualities in more than one of the following areas: academic, vocational, athletic, self-improve- ment, community work, citizenship and student leadership. Each elementary and secondary pub- lic school within the Halton District School Board nominates one of their students for this recognition. Students can only receive this honour once in their school career. "We are recognizing students who have stood out amongst their peers for their extra effort in academ- ics, athletics, school and community services, and leadership," said David Euale, Director of Educa- tion for the Halton District School Board. "We know this honour will not be their last, as they will un- doubtedly go on to future recognition in their fi eld of education and future careers." The Halton Catholic District School Board host- ed its 26th Annual Student Awards of Excellence on April 28. "The Student Awards of Excellence Ceremony provides a wonderful opportunity for us to gather as a system to recognize the achievements of our stu- dent honourees," said Diane Rabenda, Chair of the Board. "We are delighted to salute and congratulate the student award recipients on their noteworthy accomplishments." One student representative has been selected from each elementary and secondary school to re- ceive the Student Award of Excellence, and was pre- sented with a medallion and certifi cate at the cer- emony. The student recipients were nominated by their principal for having demonstrated outstand- ing qualities in: Catholic leadership, family commit- ment, involvement in school affairs and community activities, as well as dedication to a diffi cult situa- tion or task. Students may not be selected more than once for this award throughout their school career. In this special four-page section, The IFP show- cases the Halton Hills students selected to represent our local HDSB and HCDSB schools. Olivia Keast Georgetown Dis- trict High School Olivia has achieved ex- cellent grades in her cours- es, and is an extremely conscientious student and class leader. The Grade 12 student is involved in Dra- ma club, Link Crew and is a rep on the school's safe schools committee. She plays volleyball, fi eld hockey, badminton and is presi- dent of the Athletic Council. Outside school, she is a Special Olympics swim coach and works part-time.
