Submitted photo Local court jesters take GTA title For the first time in 29 years, the men's division III team from the Georgetown Racquet Club captured top spot at the District Squash League championships held at the Toronto Athletic Club recently. The local entry finished ahead of 27 other teams across the GTA, finishing up the season with a 16-2 record. Team members are: Captain Glenn Austin, Maxx Scholz, Steve Kogon, Zach Austin, Tim Mitchell and Ryan Wilson. They are currently playing in the sum- mer league and are looking improve their skills to join division II in the winter. The GRC had all five of its interclub squash teams in the playoffs this year for the first time as well. The men's division II team, consisting of captain Steve Thom- as, Ryan Berrigan, Guy Dumont, Todd Collins, Mike Joseph, Tom Wenzel and Keith Smith, also reached the City finals. GRC's men's Friday night league group, playing in its inaugural season, finished second overall and narrowly missed the fi- nals in a 3-2 loss in the semifinals to Rich- mond Hill. Team members are: Captain Phil Jackson, co-captain Wayne Gingrich, Greg Salt, Kody Lyons, Chris Primus, Bruce Tavender, Dan Ireland, Ian Watson, Mike Palombi and Ron Wagner. The GRC women's teams finished first and second, respectively, following the regular season in their leagues. The women's A team qualified for the Toron- to and District Women's finals but lost an exciting match. The women's A team was made up of captain Dianne Jackson, Kathy Cowper, Samantha Thomas, Anita DeBruyn and Betty D'Oliveira. Georgetown's women's B team lost 3-2 in a semi-final hosted at GRC that came down to the last game. The team has re- ceived strong play this year from captain Gill More and players Debbie Burton, Christine Kogon, Sharon Babin, Kate Switzer, Shari Kogon and Mary Skuriat. Having all five teams make the semifi- nals and three of them advancing to the finals made for an exceptional year, said Wayne Gingrich. To put this in perspective, GRC is a club with 200 members and is competing at the highest level with clubs that have more than 1,000 members.
