Starting at 9 a.m. and running until 3:20 p.m., students will be bused to the Gel- lert Community Centre, courtesy of Tyler Transport Limited and Denny's Bus Lines, to participate in the Risk Watch Safety Blitz. Parents and drop-in guests from the community are welcome to attend as well. According to the Canadian Institute of Child Health (The Health of Canada's Children), more children die each year of injuries than of childhood disease, includ- ing cancer- making injuries the number one health risk facing school aged children today. Risk Watch is an injury prevention program for children pre-kindergarten to Grade 8 developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and sup- ported by the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council. Halton Hills Fire Dept. Acting Captain Mark Burger says, "Risk Watch is an edu- cational initiative with age appropriate cur- riculum that has been developed for all ele- mentary school grades," adding, "The Blitz is a great opportunity to forward some very helpful information to every Grade 4 stu- dent in Halton Hills just before they let out for their summer break." The two-day event will feature interac- tive activities such as First aid/CPR with Halton EMS, helmet fitting inspection clin- ics, bicycle safety/hand signals with Halton Regional Police Services, water safety, and fire prevention, to name a few. Risk Watch partner CN Railway Police will be on site presenting safety messages about train pedestrian crossings, along with Obie the Train making a second guest appearance. The OPP will be in attendance with their special roll-over simulator showing the ef- fects of passengers not properly restrained in a moving vehicle. Organized by Coalition members made up of Catholic, Public, Christian and French School teachers, Community Health Nurses, Police, Fire, EMS, corpo- rate sponsors Ray Johnson & Associates of Co-operators Insurance, Tim Horton's, and Canadian Tire, this is just one more way to proudly advertise that Halton Hills is a Risk Watch Safe Community. Mayor Rick Bonnette says, "The tire- less efforts and dedication of the Coalition members is what makes the Risk Watch Blitz and program the wonderful success it has been for the past 12 years."
