It'sOurOwn Garbage What we achieved in 2013 SolidWaste Management Strategy Halton Region is implementing the initiatives identified in its 2012-2016 SolidWaste Management Strategy. The goal of this SolidWaste Management Strategy is to reach a waste diversion rate of 65 per cent by 2016. In 2013, Halton Region expanded the list of Blue Box acceptable materials, provided residents with larger Blue Boxes through truck load events and at permanent locations as well as decreased the garbage bag limit and introduced garbage tags. Halton (Halton.ca/takeitback) • Municipal Hazardous & SpecialWaste (www.makethedrop.ca) • Used Tires (www.rethinktires.ca) • Waste Electronics & Electrical Equipment (www.recycleyourelectronics.ca) Special Events • Compost Give Away • SpecialWaste Drop-off Days • Waste Diversion Services for Community Events By participating in Blue Box, GreenCart, YardWaste, Reuse and Household HazardousWaste programs, Halton residents continue to send less garbage to the landfill. In 2013, the overall waste diversion rate in Halton was 58.1 per cent. This rate applies to all waste material managed by Halton Region through our programs and services. It is important to note that 62 per cent of household waste (i.e. Blue Box, GreenCart, Yard Waste, Metal, Backyard Composting and Grasscycling) was diverted from landfill in 2013. Diversion results Summary of materials collected at the curb, depots, events and at the HaltonWaste Management Site in 2013: • Blue Box: 49,159 tonnes • GreenCart: 28,131 tonnes • YardWaste: 33,930 tonnes • Household HazardousWaste: 723 tonnes (from 31,022 vehicles) • ElectronicWaste: 568 tonnes Total garbage landfilled at the HaltonWaste Management Site: 70,439 tonnes. Joint Municipal-RegionalWaste Management Committee The Committee was established as a Condition of Approval for the HaltonWaste Management Site when it opened in 1992. The Committee advises Halton Regional Council regarding programs and strategies to promote the 3Rs--reduce, reuse, recycle--to minimize the amount of waste going to the landfill. The Committee comprises members from Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville. The primary Committee focus for 2013 was to support and review the progress of the implementation of the Strategy initiatives which commenced in 2013: expand Blue Box acceptable materials and enhance Blue Box capacity and decrease garbage bag limit and introduce garbage tags. The Committee also looked forward into 2014 to review and support the planned implementation of the GreenCart program into multi- residential apartments, beginning in February 2014.
