It began in 1985 as the inaugural Ac- ton Cancer Society Golf Tournament and actually took place at the Victoria Park course in Guelph, raising a little more than $3,000, and later moved to Acton after the Blue Springs Golf Club was built. Marg and John Hoare were the driv- ing force behind establishing the the tournament as Marg volunteered for the Cancer Society and was trying to come up with a new fundraising idea. Another of its founders, longtime Ac- ton resident and avid golfer Paul Murr, died of pancreatic cancer in 1988 and the committee decided that the event would continue on in his name and memory. "Heavy hitters," was how Bob MacK- innon of the Rotary Club described the makeup of the organizing committee. "If you're from Acton, you'll recog- nize the names on this committee as being people who care a lot about their community and are always there to support it." It's not the first time that a group has earned the Acton Citizen of the Year honour as the Fire Department and Citizens' Band have been previous recipients. A dinner to honour the committee will be held at the Acton Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion on Saturday, Sept. 27. The organizing committee for the annual Paul Murr Memorial Golf Tournament held at the Blue Springs Golf Club course in Acton is the recipient of the 2014 Acton Citizen of the Year award.
