For the month of August, No. 1 Dis- trict (Milton & Halton Hills) Halton Regional Police Service will be con- centrating on traffic enforcement in the vicinity of intersec- tions, specifically tar- geting right turn red- light runners. The main focus of this initiative is to educate and deter motorists from the poor driving habit of failing to stop be- fore turning right on a red light. This is a dangerous practice that can, and has, caused serious injury to pedestrians who may not be easily seen as they cross the road in front of vehicles. The Highway Traffic Act provides that on conviction, drivers face a ticket totalling $325, and the loss of three de- merit points on their licence. These infrac- tions can result in increased vehicle in- surance premiums. "It's an easy thing to avoid," says Con- stable Mike Hunchak of the District Re- sponse Unit. "If you obey the law, and drive safe- ly, you'll never get a ticket." Hunchak wants to remind the com- munity that officers don't like giving out tickets, and the best way to escape a hefty fine or even worse, injuring some- one, is to simply come to a complete stop, and then turn when it's safe. •T h e IF P • H alto n H ills, Thursday, July 31, 2014 5 DEKER eLectric ltd.
