COMMENT Local Fire Dept. responds to Lac Megantic disaster Kudos to our Halton Hills Fire Services team. In response to the Lac Megantic rail disaster our fire services have prepared a handbook for every fire vehicle which maps out every rail line in our community. This handbook also highlights the location of rail access, major buildings, hydrants and water course flow and also provides de- tails on how to read rail cars for safety information. The hand- book has been shared with CN Rail who has advised that no other community has pre- pared anything like it, to their knowledge. Once again, Halton Hills is a leader. **** Have you signed up for the Halton Hills Bike Challenge yet? It's easy to do; just log onto www.bikechal- lenge.ca and sign up. Our community goal is to log 300,000 kilometers and if we reach this goal, $66,000 will be donated to the George- town Hospital. We have now reached over 150,000 kilometers which means the Georgetown Hospital Foundation will receive $25,000. Thanks to great community sponsorships from: • Canadian Tire, $20,000. • Superior Glove, $2,000. • Ollie's Cycle & Ski, $1,000 • Young's Dentistry, $1,000 • Betty D'Oliveira, $500 • Health Span Wellness, $500 When we reach the 300,000 kilometre goal an additional $41,000 will be donated to our hospital. Do it for yourself. Do it for your family. Do it for your community! **** On Sunday, Aug. 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., I encourage ev- eryone to visit the Leathertown Festival and discover why it's "worth the drive to Acton". The annual Leathertown festival will have a wide variety of vendors, live music, a kid's zone, crafters, food and artists-- something for everyone to enjoy! **** Congratulations to the 2014 Acton Citizen of the Year award recipients-- the organizing com- mittee of Acton's Paul Murr Golf Tournament. In the 30 years since the tournament began they have raised in excess of $1 million for cancer research and CAShh. **** Congratulations to the Norval Community Association on their 40th anniversary. In addition, congratulations to Robert Craw- ford, James Cunningham and Tom Pettingill for actively vol- unteering for the Norval Com- munity Association for the past 40 years. **** Keeping it real!
