Mark Jolly has been issuing tickets for failing to stop at a red light all month during a traffic initiative in Milton and Halton Hills. Photo by Julie Slack, Metroland Media Group Stopping for a red light seems obvious, yet hun- dreds of drivers roll through intersections daily as they make a right-hand turn. Halton Regional Police in Milton and Halton Hills are targeting drivers who break this Highway Traffic Act law throughout August as part of a traffic initiative dubbed Stop on RED…Lives depend on it! Const. Mark Jolly, who works with the District Response Unit, estimates that only 10 per cent of drivers come to a complete stop on a red light as they make a right-hand turn. To prove his point, he took me out for a morning to some of the intersections he's been targeting. Sitting in a unmarked police vehicle at Scott Blvd. and Derry Rd. in Milton on Monday morning, Jolly says driv- ers don't even notice him parked a mere 20 metres from the intersection. Within minutes, Jolly pulls over the first offender. A man pleads with the officer not to give him a ticket. Failing to stop at a red light means a $325 fine and three demerit points, and the offence remains on your record for three years. More importantly, there's potential injury or worse to a pedestrian you haven't seen, Jolly notes. Drivers must come to a complete stop on the thick white line of the intersection before proceed- ing to turn right on a red light-- "after you have come to a complete stop," stressed Jolly to the driver.
