Submitted photo Three local residents with the Starlight Des- tiny Performance Sports Club earned national titles at the recent Canadian Baton Twirling Championships in Cambridge, Ont. Fifteen-year-old Paige Runstedler collected a gold medal, two silver and two bronze in her individual events and was in the top 15 for her freestyle routine. Olivia Denny, a student at Holy Cross Ele- mentary School, had several top-six individual finishes, while teammate Cameron Riel placed in the top five for her all-around event. As well, the trio won a total of four gold med- als and a silver in the team competitions. The 14-year-old Kearney forced two turnovers in the fi- nal minute of the championship game as Ontario came back from a 3-1 deficit and hung on to defeat B.C. 5-4. Set to attend Christ the King this fall, the St. Brigid's gradu- ate had two goals and two assists in six games for un- defeated Team Ontario. Kear- ney was also named MVP in a 5-3 victory over B.C. during round-robin action. Sporting the #18 jersey of his favourite player, local native Cam Flint, this was Kearney's second appearance with the provincial squad. Georgetown's first-ever sanctioned Muay Thai kick- boxing event will take place this Saturday at the Alcott Arena, with no fewer than 15 bouts scheduled. Presented by Circafit Training Centre of George- town and Cambridge-based Phady's Muay Thai, Hon- our & Glory begins at 5 p.m. and features some of the top Muay Thai competitors in the province. Organizer and local resi- dent Mike Large, himself a longtime professional Muay Thai competitor, said it re- quired a lot of legwork to go through the proper chan- nels in order to receive per- mission from the sanction- ing bodies. "This has been in the works for a while and we're excited to be the first to do this in Georgetown," said Large, co-owner of Circafit. There will be one light- weight bout for the World Amateur Muay Thai As- sociation of Canada title, "and that's going to attract a lot of people," said Large. "The arena has a capacity of 1,200 and we're looking at getting 600 to 700 in atten- dance." The guys fighting for the W.A.M.T.A.C lightweight title are Gary Petrie from New Energy Muay Thai and Hashmat Nazari from War- rior Muay Thai. Large's 19-year-old son Austin is also on the card, appearing in his seventh ca- reer match. Tickets are $25 in ad- vance or $35 at the door. They can be purchased pri- or to the event at Circafit, 60 Armstrong Ave. in George- town. Call 416-455-5320 for more info. The Fight Network will also be on hand to broad- cast the proceedings.
