Since he was born in England, Chris has always been aware of the sacrifices that were made by soldiers and civil- ians in the First and Second World Wars. But for some reason though, he didn't wear his medals or even attend Remembrance Servic- es. He figured that he remembered every day and that is what counts. His medals laid in a drawer until recently, when a friend had them cleaned, added new ribbons and mounted them for him. Finally, this coming Saturday, Chris is putting his medals on his chest for the first time, as he attends Globe's event to honour the 100th anniversary of the First World War (WW1) which runs Saturday and Sunday (10 a.m. to 5 p.m) at the Old Armoury in the Georgetown Fairgrounds. Chris and his wife Maureen have lived in Georgetown for almost 60 years. For the past 33 years, Chris has been involved on a daily basis behind the scenes at Globe Productions. For many years, the "Phantoms" (Chris, Jack Ferguson and Jim Pace) built sets for Globe shows at whatever hall Globe was rent- ing at the time. When Globe took over The Old Armoury in 2010, Chris was delighted. He and Maureen became members of the renovation committee and, at almost 95 and 90 years of age, respectivley, they still participate in Globe activities almost daily. When Globe was looking for more revenue for the project, Chris scoured the Internet and came up with a grant proposal from Heritage Canada that Globe could apply for. That en- quiry ended in a $92,000 grant for Globe and the 100th Anniversary event this weekend. How fitting that a veteran found the source for the funds to rehabilitate this building from 1866, which was used to rally and train troops in WW1 and WW2! There will be four WW1 replica aircraft fly- ing over Georgetown on Saturday. Globe dis- covered that there is a WW1 Flying Museum at the Brampton Flying Club and arranged for a 'FlyBy" at the Fairgrounds. The ceremonies to uncover the new monument to WW1 sol- diers from Georgetown and surrounding ar- eas are at noon and the flyby will take place at 1 p.m. (weather permitting) This is a free event....if you like history, you'll love this!
