Here are the responses filed by the Ward 2 candidates (elect two) in Halton Hills to: What do you consider the primary issue in Ward 2 and how would you address it? The next 10 years are go- ing to be the most important time in the history of Halton Hills. The new "Vision George- town" development (bounded by 10 Sideroad, Trafalgar Road, 15 Sideroad, and Eighth Line) will increase our population by 19,000 residents and dramatically change the landscape of our town. Now more than ever it is critical that Ward 2 has strong representation to preserve its beloved small-town atmosphere including: Ballinafad, Glen Williams, Hornby, Limehouse, Norval, Stew- arttown, Terra Cotta, and a widespread rural area. If elected I will be in constant contact with Ward 2 constituents making sure that their voices are heard during this time of change. I will be available 100% of the time to respond to their concerns and ideas to improve our quality of life. With its size, numerous hamlets and rural clusters, Ward 2 has many issues, the most pressing being the industrial de- velopment in the south of Ward 2 (Steeles Avenue), including the proposed Bramwest Free- way extending through south Norval to the 401. The search for the proposed site has created turmoil for local residents, put- ting their properties on hold until the location is announced. The project is a provincial initia- tive, but I'll urge Council to continue lobbying the Province to expedite the process, allowing impacted residents to get on with their lives. Ward 2 has some proposals for development in the hamlets. Many projects are infilling, and I'm willing to work with the various community associations to the betterment of their Second- ary Plans, maintaining a good fit in the lifestyle and fabric of the hamlets. I also look forward to working closely with Halton Police and the Town Infrastructure Services Department, to resolve any rural problems. Maintaining a sustainable en- vironment as the town grows is a tremendous challenge for our villages and rural areas. It is the "primary issue" we will face in the immediate future. There needs to be an equi- table balance between the rights of old and potential new residents. In the country- side, we must respect the needs of the agricultural community for the future. In villages, we have vi- brant, strong communities which could easily dis- solve under pressure from poorly planned growth and zoning changes, traffic congestion, water is- sues and critical conflicts of future usage between stakeholders. I am convinced that, within a framework from the province and region, we can make a signifi- cant difference at a local level with a government not afraid to stand up for the rights of residents. The growth of the 401 Indus- trial Corridor must be managed to encourage prestige industrial expansion. While the majority of lands in the southern portion of Halton Hills are controlled by the provincial government (potential roadways), Halton Hills must be 'hands-on' to en- sure residents are protected in a proper manner. The farming community must be ensured that their properties will be viable and in their best inter- est. This includes agri-tourism facilities within Halton Hills. Growth within our hamlets and villages need proper guidance and is "the best" for those cur- rently living within the boundaries. Taxes, rural roads, policing and general safety will always be issues requiring a councillor's atten- tion and I will remain diligent to this end. I have en- joyed governance and participation on the Budget, Corporate Affairs, Site Alteration, Arena Steering, Community Affairs, Economic Development, Fire Services & Emergency Planning, Conservation Hal- ton and the Glen Williams & Norval Secondary Plan- ning committees.
