Former Halton Hills Regional Councillor John Day has died. Day, 67, died Thursday at Georgetown Hospital following a long battle with cancer. Day served as the Wards 3/4 regional councillor from 1994 to 2003. Mayor Rick Bonnette, who was a council member with Day said, "he was the social conscience on council ... He was well liked by his constituents." Regional councillor Jane Fogal worked with Day on many commu- nity projects and said he was "first and foremost, a kind man." "He was always willing to help people and local organizations. I en- joyed working with him as his heart was in the right place. He was pas- sionate about improving the quality of life for our residents," said Fogal. In 2002, while still on council, Day ran as the Halton riding candi- date for the provincial Liberals but was not elected to the post. In 2003 he had an unsuccessful bid for the Mayor's job. Day's daughter Amaranth Low- rie said after her dad left Halton Hills council, "he totally dedi- cated his life to health and fit- ness." He became certified as a canfit pro train- er and a trainer for Nordic pole walking. "He dedicated so much time to helping others," said Low- rie. He counseled people who had addiction problems. She said her dad "had such a big heart. He didn't know how to say no, he wanted to help anyone and everyone." Lowrie said her father loved boating and fishing at the family cottage on Lake Joseph. He also en- joyed gardening and had worked for Sheridan Nurseries in the sum- mers since he was 13 years old be- cause he loved it. Before he became a councillor, Lowrie said Day was the head of the City of Mississauga Landscape Architecture dept. He had also been involved with George- town Little Theatre for many years, acting in several productions. Lowrie added her father had the "adoration of his grandkids." Day is survived by his wife Gretchen, son Trevor, daughter Amaranth Lowrie and her husband Jason and grandchildren Scarlett, Isabella and Olivia, and his mother Kathleen Day. He is predeceased by his father Harold. Visitation will be Friday, Oct. 10, 6-9 p.m. at J.S. Jones Funeral Home, and the funer- al will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, 11 a.m. at St. Alban's Anglican Church, Glen Williams. Funeral for longtime councillor John Day is on Saturday JOHN DAY
