The chair of the Halton District School Board (HDSB) said Wednesday that the separation of public and Catholic stu- dents using the same bus in Georgetown seems to have curbed complaints from its driver about inappropriate language and out-of-control noise. A parent of a seven-year-old George Kennedy Public School student who sat with a friend on the bus from St. Francis of Assisi accused the HDSB of using "seg- regation" in a CBC report to address the situation. HDSB and the Halton Catholic Dis- trict School Board agreed that students en route to public schools should sit in the front of the buses, while Catholic stu- dents will sit in the back. Parents were in- formed of the new policy in a letter sent home last week and it took effect Monday. "The concerns that were expressed about the misbehaviour and the separat- ing of the students has actually helped control the behaviour," said HDSB chair Kelly Amos. "The driver needs to be able to control the behaviour and it was felt that by sepa- rating the students, this would happen." Parent Matthew Welford of Glen Wil- liams told the CBC that he didn't feel it was fair that the students were separated and that "those problems have to be re- solved by the individuals." The Welford family said Tuesday they had no further comment. Amos added that the decision to split up the students was made by the princi- pals of each school in consultation with the bus driver.
