Photo by Jon Borgstrom The Halton Regional Police Fraud Unit recently entered into an investigation involving fraudulently obtained credit cards and mail theft. The investigation focused on fraudulent "true name" credit card applications be- ing completed online and un- beknownst to those victims who had their identity com- promised. Once approved, the credit cards were mailed to the victim's address on file where fraudsters laid in wait, inter- cepting the cards moments after being delivered. Once in possession of the credit cards, the fraudsters would immedi- ately rack up thousands of dol- lars in unauthorized credit. A male suspect was identi- fied as being involved in sev- eral mail theft occurrences in the Georgetown and Acton ar- eas, specifically targeting rural properties with roadside mail- boxes. Regional Fraud investi- gators, in conjunction with 1 and 2 District Criminal Inves- tigation Bureau members, ar- rested the male after conduct- ing several acts of mail theft in the Halton Hills area.
