(CASH PRIZES $$)(CASH PRIZES $$)@ 9PM Rilley, the local beagle who took part in a groundbreaking U.S. can- cer study, has died. The dog, the beloved family pet of the Janke family of Georgetown, was euthanized Saturday, Sept. 20 after suffering a grand mal seizure. He was 13. Rilley took part in a clini- cal trial at the Ohlfest Brain Tumour Lab at the University of Minnesota back in 2010 after being di- agnosed with meningioma-- a tumour of the meninges or lining of the brain. The tri- al was testing the viability of using a vaccine developed from a patient's extracted tumour cells to aid curing the cancer in humans. After treatment, Rilley was de- clared cancer-free and cured. Last year his family reported he was do- ing well and full of energy. Roy Janke, Rilley's owner, says his brain has been shipped to the University of Minnesota for final examination and his doctor is not expecting to find any regrowth of the tumour. "As sad as this time is, we can take solace in the fact that we were given four more years with our beloved friend and that, in some small way, he helped to ad- vance medical treatments for his hu- man counter- parts battling brain tumours," said Janke. Janke has been chronicling Rilley's life on his blogspot http:// chroniclesofrilley.blogspot.ca/ Local dog who participated in university cancer study dies RILLEY
