One of Canada's leading concert organists will perform this Sunday evening, Nov. 2 at St. John's United Church in Georgetown. Christopher Dawes is prin- cipal organist at Timothy Eaton Memorial Church in Toronto and a member of Uni- versity of Toronto's Faculty of Music, and has performed pop and classical favourites across Canada and around the world. Also on stage will be Toron- to musician Daniel Rubinoff on saxophone. The 7 p.m. concert, part of St. John's 175th anniversary celebrations, will take place in the church's stunning- ly beautiful newly renovated sanctu- ary. Known for its outstanding acous- tics, the space now has an enlarged, wheel-chair acces- sible platform stage, refurbished organ, flexible seating, new carpet and updated audio-vi- sual and projection technol- ogy. Tickets will be available at the door for $25, or for $20 in advance at the Silvercreek Café on Main St., George- town, or the church office, 11 Guelph St. Other events this anniversary weekend include a Saturday night Va- riety Show, free to all beginning at 7 p.m., a ham dinner (now sold out), and a special Sunday morning service beginning at 10 a.m. with speaker the Reverend Nan- cy Knox, a former minister at St. John's. The weekend caps three years of anniversary celebra- tions for St. John's, which is "one congregation with two places of worship." Its Glen Williams church was founded in 1836 by Rev. Benajah Williams, after whom the hamlet was named, and the Georgetown church be- gan three years later, at a time when circuit riders on horse- back travelled through 'inter- minable wilderness' in this area to preach to waiting vil- lagers. One early speaker was Egerton Ryerson, the founder of public education in Ontar- io, and of Victoria College and the Ryerson Press. The church has gone through many changes since then, but remains true to its motto "Open Doors, Open Hearts, Open Minds."
