Happy Halloween! We've got a cookie recipe for you today that would be a great Halloween treat if you have anyone that you are allowed to give homemade treats to. But because of their colour they are also nice for Christmas, so hold onto the recipe if need be. Do you remember Halloween from your youth? Now I'm 49, so my recollections may be slightly different from yours, but basi- cally I'm talking about trick or treating in the 1970s. So different from Halloween today. First of all, store-bought costumes were unheard of! Maybe, if you were super lucky, you might get a wig or prop of some kind like a sword at a store, but most of the time the entire costume was scrounged from home. I remember wearing some old clothes of my dad's that were all baggy and ripped, plus my Grandpa's old hat and then my mom smeared Vaseline on my face and ripped open a tea bag and blotted the tea onto the Vaseline- thus making an unshaven appear- ance and I went as a hobo. One year my sister went as a Christmas tree- mom put a green garbage bag over her head with a hole for her head. Then taped on some Christmas ornaments and garland and completed the outfi t with a star attached to a hat. I'm not sure we even got to the end of the driveway when a gust of wind blew all her decorations off and we had to go back inside for repairs. I was a banana one year- yellow track pants, yellow shirt and yellow construction paper cut into "peels" and taped around my waist with duct tape. My girlfriend was a grape the same year. Once again, the garbage bag over the head followed by purple bal- loons infl ated and taped all over the garbage bag.Thinking up and preparing the costume was half the fun! Then there were the treats. Homemade treats some of the time, packaged treats the rest. All the treats had to come home for in- spection before we could eat them. Lots of apples, one lady made homemade caramel apples for everyone--what a lot of work! Lots of those weird little candies in the orange and black wrappers- kind of like caramels, but not really. I never was sure exactly what they were. Gum. And the most treasured treats- potato chips and chocolate bars! When we got home we would dump all of our haul onto the carpet and divide everything into piles, sorting and counting as we went.
