However, op- era composer Giacomo Puccini, called the greatest composer of Italian opera after Verdi, also used his huge talent to create many other lovely pieces. The Georgetown Choral Society is thrilled to feature Puc- cini's lovely "Messa di Gloria" in its 43rd annual Christmas concert. It is not surprising that he composed this masterful sacred work at age 22, as he followed a 124-year old family tradition (1740-1864) as the "maestro di cappella" of the Cattedrale di San Martino, in Italy. The program also has many other tra- ditional Christmas songs such as the lively "Goin' to Bethlehem" and a very innovative version of "The 12 Days of Christmas" in- corporating many styles of European mu- sic stretching over five centuries.
