We're already experiencing tem- peratures well below the freezing mark and with the holiday season fast approaching, it looks like De- cember will be a period of short days, cold nights and cloudy skies. For most, Christmas is a time of joy with friends and loved ones. For some though, it is a reminder of what they don't have and of how hard life can be. At this time of year I ask that you remember to donate to organi- zations that serve our community, such as food banks, Salvation Army kettles and Shar- ing Trees to name a few. What's often lost in the statistics is the number of children who are in need as their families struggle to make ends meet. Many of those need- ing assistance are working people. As the holidays approach, spread good cheer and help others to be in equally happy spirits. * * * * As we saw last December during the ice storm; being prepared for an emergency is important. A family emergency survival kit is simple and should be prepared ahead of time. Make sure your family knows where the survival kit is kept. Stock these six basics in your home: water, food, first aid sup- plies, tools and supplies such as, clothing, bedding and special items. Have your cell phone charged and cash on hand. Please visit our website for more information on how you can prepare. www.haltonhills.ca/fire/pdf/ emergPrepareGuide2007.pdf * * * * Congratulations to Lois Fraser, the 2014 Recipient of the Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship. Lois Fraser received the 2014 Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship from the Lieutenant Governor of On- tario, the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell. The Investiture ceremony took place at Queen's Park on Wednes- day Nov. 5. Lois-- one of 13-- received the OMC medal in recognition of her volunteer work over the past 30 years. There are 13 million people in the province and there are 13 OMC winners, so Lois is "one in a million". Some- thing we already knew in Halton Hills. This is a wonderful honour for Lois and she is most de- serving. * * * * Congratulations to: • Fresh & Clean Laundromat, Acton • Lovelinx Jewellery, Acton • St. John's United Church on their 175th Anniversary, George- town • The Hooded Goblin Grand Opening, Georgetown • The Royal Academy of Arts & Education, Georgetown * * * * I can be reached by telephone at 905-873-2601, ext. 2342 or by email at mayor@haltonhills.ca or read my blog at www.rickbonnette. blogspot.com.
