On Jan. 1 it became il- legal to smoke on or around playgrounds, sports fields and oth- er sports surfaces such as basketball and tennis courtrs. In addition all outdoor bar and restaurant patios, except existing Royal Canadian Legion pa- tios, are now smoke-free. The new requirements of the Smoke Free Ontario Act are an attempt to lessen the impacts of tobac- co related disease in terms of both lives lost and increased healthcare costs. "We understand the Province's objec- tive to protect the health of our children." said Mayor Rick Bonnette. "Both the de- cision-making and enforcement of the smoke-free strategy is beyond the control of Council. The Province is counting on the support of municipalities to achieve the objectives of this program." Residents will see "no smoking" signs being installed in Town parks in the coming weeks. Enforcement of the smoking ban will be led by the Region of Halton Health De- partment which can be reached toll free at 1-866- 442-5866 (1-866-4HAL- TON). More information on the Smoke- Free Ontario Strategy can be found on the Province's website at http://www.ontario. ca/health-and-wellness/smoke-free-on- tario or by calling Service Ontario toll-free at 1-866-532-3161. Smoking now banned in parks, playgrounds, sports fields and patios
