Georgetown NEWS Mill St. rail crossing gets overdue repairs By Lisa Tallyn ltallyn@theifp.ca A letter from the Mayor to Metrolinx Chair Robert Prichard last week sparked some action resulting in the Mill St. rail crossing finally being repaired. Mayor Rick Bonnette sent the letter Jan 15 after complaining at last Monday's council meeting about the poor repair job Goderich Exeter Rail Line (GEXR) and Metrolinx did at the crossing and the fact they hadn't come back to fix it despite re- peated calls from Town staff. He requested in the letter dated Jan. 15 the work be done expeditiously. It appears the letter worked, because af- ter waiting for months the work was com- pleted by PNR Railworks on behalf of GO Transit Tuesday. "This crossing was rehabbed last Octo- ber, but left a large "hump" for vehicular traffic to drive over," said Wesley Logan. General Manager of GEXR. "The reason why it took so long to ad- dress this problem was due to GEXR's con- cern of reconciling the interests of all the stakeholders involved," said Logan. "Go Transit is the new owner of this infrastructure, the repair affects both the train and traffic signal system, so it needed to be in accordance with Go Transit's fu- ture expansion plans (which are in the early stages of being developed) and not to cause undue traffic congestion," Logan said. "The repairs were overdue but I am pleased to see the quick action as a result of my correspondence," said Bonnette. "The people of Acton and the commuters will be very relieved to see this work completed." The Town's Community Sustainability In- vestment Fund is accepting applications. Our Community Sustainability Strategy ‚ Imagine Halton Hills captures the visions, goals and focus areas for a better quality of life. To encourage and assist stakeholders in introducing actions that contribute to the Strategy's implementation the Town Sustain- ability Implementation Committee is ac- cepting application requests for funding. The deadline is April 30 at 4:30 p.m. "This is the second year of the Community Sustainability Investment Fund and it is an exciting initiative for our community," said Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette. "There are many organizations interested in implement- ing the goals and focus areas of the Commu- nity Sustainability Strategy and this fund is set up to help them. It is also a worthwhile invest- ment in our community. The Fund continues to show our commitment to take practical steps that will raise the quality of life in our community. I encourage organizations to review the Community Sustainability Invest- ment Fund for eligibility and explore ways in which we can jointly shape our Town's fu- ture." Given the Community Sustainability Strat- egy's broad focus, its implementation will benefit many other Town initiatives, includ- ing the Cycling Master Plan, Youth Needs Study, Official Plan, Economic Development Strategy, Mayor's Community Energy Plan, and the Green Plan.
