LOCAL RESIDENTS HAVE FALLEN PREY TO TAX SCAM Halton police are warning the public about a tax-related phone scam that has resurfaced, primarily targeting the Southeast Asian community. Police say the fraudsters claim to be members of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and are making phone calls advising unsuspecting victims they owe the government large sums of money in taxes. Victims are told that if the taxes aren't paid immediately they will be arrested. � e fraudulent callers instruct the victims to purchase prepaid credit cards in the amount owed and to forward them imme- diately to the 'CRA agent'. Police say they have received one to two fraud reports per week from victims who have fallen prey to the scam with losses from $2,000 to $5,000 each.
