COMMENT The way we were Longtime Norval resident Ormie Carter, who passed away in 2007, was a member of the "Devil's Bri- gade"-- the First Special Services Force, which was the joint American/Canadian regiment during the Second World War. This month the regiment received the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal-- one of the highest honours-- from U.S. President Barrack Obama in Washington. "Smiley Carter" saw heavy action in Italy and other parts of Europe and was a POW for eight months. From our readers 'Quote unquote' It may be chilly but things are heating up at the library While temperatures may still be chilly, a sure sign that warmer days are ahead is the upcoming release of the 2015 spring and summer Town Activity and Service Guide to be delivered this week. Guides will also be available at Town facili- ties and on our website at www.haltonhills.ca. Recreation & Parks' spring and summer program registration starts March 4, kicking off a fresh new season. **** A new reason to love Mondays-- the George- town branch of the Hal- ton Hills Public Library will be open on Mon- day afternoons from 1-5 p.m. effective March 1. This opens up great study space for stu- dents and well-equipped work areas for the self-employed. As well, the Acton branch will be opening Sundays from 1-5 p.m. dur- ing the school year, making for a great family outing on a Sunday afternoon. **** I'm happy to report that Broccolini Construction, a single-source provid- er of construction, development and real-estate services for the residential, commercial and industrial markets has purchased 30 acres in the Halton Hills Premier Gateway. We look forward to working with Broc- colini Construction and assisting them in moving their application forward and to more industry in Halton Hills. **** A couple of weeks ago, Halton Re- gion released the new 'Text with 911' in Halton; giving the DHHSI (deaf, hard of hearing, speech impaired) community the ability to reach emer- gency services through their handheld device. This step forward is part of our on- going public safety collab- orative with all our emer- gency service providers in making Halton one of the safest communities in Canada. *** Wastewise, located at 12 Armstrong Ave. in George- town, has been serving our community since 1991. This volunteer organiza- tion has diverted more than 2,157 tons of waste for re-use and over 3,076 tons of material for recy- cling which includes over 150 metric tons of waste. Over the years, Waste- wise has given back $104,401 to our community. We are lucky to have such an organization in Halton Hills. *** Congratulations to: • The Georgetown Rotary Club which is celebrating its 60th anniversary; • Ross Physiotherapy Solutions on its recent grand re-opening; • Halton Hills Minor Baseball Asso- ciation on ois recent amalgamation of the Acton Minor Baseball and George- town Baseball Associations. **** Keeping it real!
