Eight pages inside By Lisa Tallyn ltallyn@theifp.ca The Independent & Free Press website (theifp.ca) has a fresh, new look that's much more user friendly. The easy-to-navigate site is now packed full of content. There's the big, impactful story and photo that grabs readers' attention right at the top of the page, several spots for all the latest local news, sports and community stories and an ex- citing addition is Canadian Press national and provincial news, sports and entertainment. "Traditionally we've always been the source for local news," said IFP managing editor Chris Vernon. "Now we want to be your No. 1 source for all news." Photos and artwork are much more prominent, there's weather information and the site also fea- tures a Calendar section where area residents can check out what's going on in town and post information about community events. Readers can also pro- vide comments, but to post event information or comments they will have to register first. "It's very social media friendly. People will be able to enjoy us through Facebook and Twitter," said Vernon. Check out our new website Fred is Georgetown's Citizen of the Year Renaissance man, successful lawyer, volunteer and philan- thropist are just some of the adjectives to describe George- town's Citizen of the Year for 2014. Ninety-three-year-old Fred Helson has accomplished much in his lifetime and a large part of it has been spent in Halton Hills. He resides in the same home on Trafalgar Rd. across from The Club at North Halton that he and his father co-founded in 1959. "There are so many people here who are interested in the same things I am and I'm glad I was able to join in with them," he said. "I'm talking chiefly about the arts, whether it's musical or phys- ical or painting or photography." A self-admitted shutterbug, Helson still maintains a dark- room in his basement, although he says he's been won over by digital photography. Attendees of local community events would often later receive photos of themselves in the mail from him. "Now he annoys everybody by stopping everyone from eating when we're having dinner be- cause he wants to get pictures of the whole table," laughs his wife Rose Anna.
