The collaboration between the composer and the choir began in 2013 when the choir participat- ed in one of Hatfield's workshops at Festival 500 in Newfoundland. "Here for the Gold" is a musical homage to the Ontario landscape. The text of the piece is about not only the seasonal changes of our landscape, but also in our lives, and the fluidity of our rela- tionship with the planet. The 16 high school-aged singers who make up the Gaudeamus youth Choir were fully engaged in the process through their conductor, Diane Murray-Charrett, and conversations with Hatfield as the piece was composed. Bringing out Hatfield to work with the choir was part of the plan to fully engage the choir in the process of bringing a new piece of music to life. Bass singer Thomas Charrette commented, "Having the composer in our presence and giving us his perspective on the meaning of the text, as well as the harmonic choices he made, deeply en- riched the music making experience for us." Also on hand for the spring workshop was To- ronto conductor Craig Pike, the Artistic Director of "That Choir" who discussed 'Absolute Intona- tion" and opened the chorister's ears to listen for harmonic changes through warm-ups and score study. The choir will sing the local premiere of "Here for the Gold" at its annual Earth Day concert on Wednesday, April 22, 7 p.m., at St. John's United Church, 11 Guelph Street. Tickets are available at Silver Creek Café. They will give a national pre- miere in Ottawa this summer when they travel to Ottawa for the Unisong Choral Festival.
