"National Volunteer Appreciation Week is a time to celebrate and recognize the hard work and dedication that our volunteers demonstrate every day in our hospitals," said Denise Hard- enne, President & CEO, Halton Healthcare. "We would like to extend a huge 'Thank You!' to our volunteers for all their generous service and fundraising contributions." Several events are being held to honour vol- unteers who assist Halton Healthcare in many different capacities - directing visitors, assisting at the bedside, preparing materials behind the scenes, running gift shops and other fundraising ventures - for dozens of programs. "We are very fortunate that so many volun- teers share their gift of time and talent with us to help improve the patient experience at our Georgetown, Milton, and Oakville Hospitals," said Sharon Norris, Vice President, Human Re- sources Planning and Organizational Develop- ment. "This year's theme, 'Volunteers - A Work of Heart,' describes perfectly the contribution the volunteers make. They truly are the heart of our organization." SMILE PROGRAM Volunteers play a key role in Halton Health- care's innovative SMILE program on the Medi- cine 4-Centre unit at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. Created by a small group of healthcare professionals with backgrounds in nursing, phys- iotherapy and occupational therapy, the SMILE program relies on volunteers to visit and engage patients who are at risk of delirium and functional decline by spending time with them doing men- tally- and physically-stimulating activities. Halton Healthcare hopes to expand the SMILE program to Milton and Georgetown in the near future. To watch a video about the SMILE program, click here. In an age of selfies it is more important than ever to take a moment to think about someone other than yourself. More than a moment, in fact. This year, Ontario students will rise to the challenge for six weeks, kicking off with Na- tional Volunteer Week April 12-18. The 2015 ChangeTheWorld campaign, April 12 to May 24, is an Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge, a joint initiative between the Ontario Volunteer Centre Network (OVCN) and the Government of Ontario to inspire high school students to give back to their community. Students from different schools, neighbourhoods, and back- grounds will share their passion in dozens of community projects. Volunteer Halton, our lo- cal volunteer centre, is committed to working with students to realize their vision of better communities. We support youth as they think outside the box to find ways to contribute that are beyond the traditional volunteer roles and capitalize on the skills and interests of high school students today. ChangeTheWorld is an opportunity to pro- vide a vital connection between students and the world around them. Last year 3,263 youth volunteered a minimum of 3 hours each in over 30 events across Halton to a total of 12,238 hours. This year Volunteer Halton invites all youth between the ages of 14-18 to look around and choose a way you can make a difference, big or small, in your neighbourhood.
