Thank you to all of our volunteers for making a difference in so many lives. We couldn't do it without you. Sterling - adopted May 2014 YOU AND YOUR PET Cookie and Candy, two sweet young sisters, are looking for a quiet home. The girls began their lives outdoors in rural Acton, moved into a spa- cious garage and are now residing in NHKR fos- ter care. Observing their gentle demeanour and affectionate personalities it's obvious they are more suited to life indoors with people. They are comfortable with their foster family but the un- known will send them running-- curiosity will bring them back. The girls do not venture out- doors. Although they've retained their interest in birds and squirrels, a view from a cat climber is now their preference. Both girls are affectionate and play- ful with their foster family: enjoying tummy rubs, chin scratches and fun games. Candy interacts cautiously with new people, in a quiet environment she can be encouraged (bribed) with treats to venture forward for pets and being picked up. Cookie needs more time to become comfortable but can also be motivated when offered her favourite foods and toys. Fortunately the girls are amenable and gentle when handling them, es- pecially during nail trims. Candy and Cookie are polydactyls (more than usual toes) also known as Hemingway cats. Their feet resemble mittens with all the extra toes! With patience and nurtur- ing, the girls with big feet will happily become your new best friends. Candy and Cookie could be ad- opted separately but we are hoping a family will have room in their home and hearts for two beautiful brown tabby sisters. Candy and Cookie will be avail- able for adoption at Pet Valu, 369 Mountainview Rd. South, April 18 from 1-3 p.m. Young cats will be avail- able at Pet Valu, 235 Guelph St. on April 18 and 19, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For adoption info www.NHKR.ca or call Barb, 905-873-8547. By Barb Johnson info@nhkr.ca Sisters Candy and Cookie are treats We featured these mature girls (nine years ap- prox.) a few weeks ago, to no avail, they are sadly still at the Shelter. We think of Ginger and Bailey as "Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers", they dance in unison, they react together, they seem to read each other's thoughts, and they are truly bonded. Yes, you would be adopting two dogs but they are a unit of one. In the last few weeks while Bailey is coming out of her shell and becoming more confident, it is Ginger (the original leader) who is exhibiting stress-related behavior. She is reluctant to leave the building and once out, this inquisitive happy girl now often just sits or lies down and seems disinterested in her surroundings. She still perks up for her walks, which she manages with alac- rity on a coupler, but then having to go back into confinement is bothering her and therefore us! The pluses for making room in your home for these lovelies are many. Both are very clean and have never once soiled their kennel, can be left alone at home with no mishaps or surprises. Both dogs are mellow; both like car rides (although Ginger falls asleep), both are gentle and Ginger es- pecially is generous with her kisses. Bailey would also love access to beaches and water! The ladies are good with other dogs, used to cats, would be most suited to an ADULT-only family or children over 12 who would respect their ages and space. Above all, Ginger and Bailey would be very easy to look after, sound natures, calm, responsive, mature, perfect for a low key family where love and cuddles are in plentiful supply. Ginger and Bailey MUST be adopted together; separation at this age would be counterproductive to a humane life…they have always relied on each other. Please contact the Supervisor to discuss the very special adoption arrangement for the ladies at 519-833-2287 or e-mail adoptions@upper- credit.com. Bailey and Ginger deserve another mention By Judith-Anne Kolu info@uppercredit.com Bailey (left) and Ginger are bonded and need to be adopted together. CANDY COOKIE
