It's tax season -- the perfect time for fraud- sters to make phone calls or send emails at- tempting to get people's money. Halton Regional Police Fraud Unit is re- minding the public to be on alert and not to fall for these tax scams. Police encourage ev- eryone to learn how to protect their personal information and finances, and to share those tips with family and friends. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at http:// www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/ english/bulletin-2015-04-taxes.html provides useful information on what tax scams look like, how to identify them and what people can do to protect themselves. Police say the number one rule for the pub- lic is not to take immediate action.  Take the time to verify the information and do some homework.  Why would the Canada Revenue Agency be asking anyone for personal infor- mation via telephone or email that they likely already have on file??? Police have received numerous complaints from the public about these phishing scams.  The Regional Fraud Unit is aware of them and encourages the public to verify if the enquiry is credible or not and if necessary, delete the email or ignore the telephone request.? For more information or someone who has been a victim of fraud, contact the Cana- dian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or at www.antifraudcentre.ca.
