Halton Region had Ontario's lowest average unemployment rate (4.4 per cent) and Canada's strongest labour force participation rate at 73.6 per cent (i.e., those employed or actively seeking employment). Halton also saw over $1.5 billion invested in new construction and expansions across the region - up 14 per cent since 2011. "Crossing guards play an im- portant role in ensuring the safety of children everyday through our Town, but unfortunately we have a shortage at this time and are hav- ing difficulty attracting people to the role," said Dick Spear, Superin- tendent of Public Works. Crossing guards are required to escort school children across a roadway safely at designated school crossing locations in ac- cordance with the Ontario High- way Traffic Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Town of Halton Hills guidelines. Responsibilities include: • Obey all established traffic safety regulations to ensure pedes- trians (going to and from school) are assisted in crossing roadways at designated locations • Wear safety equipment (e.g. safety vest and reflective arm- bands) supplied by the Corpora- tion of the Town of Halton Hills at all times while on duty • Report and document any incidents or accidents involving traffic and/or pedestrians to the supervisor and appropriate police or school officials Permanent positions are re- quired for two one-hour shifts per day, Monday to Friday, with a pay rate of $16.98 per hour/shift. Standby positions are required on an as-needed basis (on-call) with a pay rate of $16.98 per hour/ shift. Spear said the role is ideal for retirees or others with flexible schedules. The crossing guards will be required to work in diverse weather conditions.
