Some enthusiasts have been griping about the AWD variant only getting six gears, but it wasn't long ago we were happy with five. And I hate using paddle shifters with eight. You can operate the paddles or bump the gear lever up and down the range while in Drive, but it's really in semi-automatic mode, as the transmission will shift for you at the ap- propriate time. Switch to Manual, and the on- board nanny won't kick in unless you hit the rev limiter. All this can be made better (or thriftier) with the RC's drive mode system.
