John & Suzanne Luciani COMMENT A hectic mom finds that special meaning in Mother's Day By Melanie Hennessey mel_hennessey@hotmail.com The world places some pretty high expectations on Mother's Day. It's often portrayed as a day where moms shouldn't have to lift a fin- ger and are showered with endless praises, gifts, special outings and the like. But let's be honest, moms; if you're not spending the day away from home, many of your Moth- er's Day moments are going to be similar to any other day. If you have young kids and they know you're in the house, they're still going to ask you to pour them juice, wipe their bum, make them a snack, etc. It's funny how dad can be sitting be- side them, but they're still going to yell, "Mom, where are my shoes?" My Mother's Day started like ev- ery other Sunday, which involves trying to get my two kids out the door in somewhat of a timely fash- ion for church. This really left little time for me to lounge, or leisurely enjoy a Mother's Day breakfast, or even properly get myself ready after having to stop and help with shirt buttons, hair brushing, sibling disputes, etc. I admit, when we rolled into church I felt a little deflated that the day had been completely ordinary so far. I ventured downstairs to set up my Sunday School class while my husband and kids went to find seats. I think God must have known I needed a special moment to lift my heart, and he delivered it to me then. As I was walking up the aisle to join my family, my son caught a glimpse of me approaching and his little face lit up. When I got closer he reached his hand out and grabbed mine, holding it tightly for the rest of the service. As my daughter cuddled in on my other side, hugging my arm, I was struck by the magnitude of this awesome, life-long gift that I've been given; an amazing responsi- bility that goes far beyond just be- ing "mom." They reach out to me and hold on for comfort, stability, unconditional love, protection, re- assurance, encouragement and so much more. We went on to have a great day celebrating motherhood with family and friends, but my favourite mo- ment was the simple, seemingly ef- fortless display of affection from my children. Learning how to relish in the amazing ordinary is the best gift we mothers can give ourselves. The View From Here
