It's time once again to dig into those closets and give generously to our "forgotten neighbours to the north." The Inuit Outreach Project recently kicked off its 2015 season from its new location in the St. Paul's Anglican Parish Hall in Norval. The initia- tive, headed up by local resident Connie Karlsson, collects thousands of pounds of warm clothing for Inuit babies and children, along with non-perish- able food items. Due to overwhelming need in northern Inuit communities, Karlsson has expanded the project's collection this year to include women's clothing (including new underwear) and items such as fishing line, lures and material to make parkas for the men. Monetary donations are also accepted to purchase necessities like diapers and wipes. "Anything we take for granted here, they don't have," she said. "Some people think this is a Band- Aid solution, but we're truly helping relieve the burden of clothes buying for them." The Norval resident first spearheaded a cor- porate clothing drive for the Inuits in 2009-- an initiative that grew into the Inuit Outreach Project through the Halton Hills Anglican Church Cluster. For the past five years, she and a group of dedicat- ed volunteers have collected a massive amount of non-perishable food and clothing, spent countless hours sorting and packing these items, and even had them shipped by land and then air to those in need in four Arctic communities.
