Many organizations in Canada promote the occasion, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and various non-profit organizations that advocate for the families of Canada's missing children. Having a safety chat doesn't require that you compromise your child's innocence; all it means is reviewing the best ways to get help and the kind of situations to avoid. Here are a few facts and tips to help you navigate your way through a safety talk. • According to the Canadian Police Information Centre's 2014 report, some 41,000 children under age 18 were reported missing. Thankfully, more than half the reports were removed within 24 hours of the alert. That is why it's important to have the safety talk with your kids. • Most abductions are carried out by a person who knows the child, especially by a non-custodial parent. Review with your children which adults are authorized to pick them up at school and daycare. Do some role playing to reinforce how to get help from a parent or caregiver if an unplanned-for situation arises. • Remind your kids that it's okay to be polite to strangers, but that being polite doesn't mean going along with a request or engaging in a conversation. Teach them to check with a parent, teacher or caregiver before going anywhere with an adult or older child. And if a situation doesn't feel right, they should feel free to get help from a community resource person or trusted adult friend or neighbour. Talk to your children about who is authorized to pick them up from school or daycare. 185 Guelph Street, Georgetown 374 Queen Street East, Acton Holly Light broker Karen Pedersen broker Jennifer Sargeant sales representative Brenda Hamilton sales representative Danielle Quilty sales representative Ray Chesher broker of record Family Practice & Walk-in Clinic 905-877-2220 Alpha Care Medical Clinic Alpha Care Pharmacy 905-702-1500 • New Shingles Vaccine • Cosmetic Botox • New & Walk-in Patients Welcome • New Extended Walk-in Hours 310 Guelph St., Unit 1 & 2 (beside Fire & Ice & Baker's Dozen) • All Drug Plans Accepted • Senior Discount Everyday • Compounding RX Services • No $2.00 Co-pay Acton Home Hardware 519-853-1730 • Hardware Store • Kitchen & Bath • BBQ Centre • Decorating Service 519-853-1730 Hardware Store Voted Favourite … • Lawn & Equipment Sales • Lighting Store • Paint & Wallpaper Store • Plumbing Store www.homehardware.ca Jeffrey L.
