"Canadian municipalities are facing many serious challenges, from needed infrastructure investments to rail safety," said Somerville, who just completed a term as FCM second vice-presi- dent. "I'm proud and honored to work as a strong advocate on behalf of our community as well all municipalities." FCM has been the national voice of munici- pal governments since 1901. It fosters the devel- opment of sustainable communities to improve quality of life by promoting strong, effective, and accountable municipal govern- ment. Mayor Rick Bonnette said "Councillor Somerville does a great job ensuring smaller mu- nicipalities are heard and consid- ered. Small towns are an impor- tant contributor to the fabric of our country and Clark ensures our needs and issues are heard." Elections were held during FCM's recent an- nual general meeting held in Edmonton. The election is for one year and Somerville will be- come president of FCM next year.
