Geez, I've sat through countless light changes in Toronto, just waiting for someone up ahead to take the initiative and drive through that damn ad- vance flashing green light. At the same time, the Edmonton cabbies were certainly adept at getting through traffic. Man, we'd whip through intersections like a scared rabbit. (I usually sat behind the driver-- also like a scared rabbit.) Early during our stay, I figured it was the safest place to be in the event another cabbie com- ing the opposite direction was pushing the envelop more than our driver. One of our drivers was particularly interesting. He told us how when he first arrived in Canada, he lived in Scarborough. "That was a scary place to live," he said, "So I moved to Toronto." He lived in Toronto for two years, then briefly to Brampton, before relocating to Edmonton, where he has been driving cab for years now. As we flew through the next intersection, Dave asked the golden question. "So, did you drive a cab in Toronto when you lived there?" I rearranged my seat belt as we cleared the in- tersection, he answered so nonchalantly. "No man, I'd never drive a cab in Toronto," he said. "Those guys are just crazy out there."
