See page 22 Georgetown Hospital's obstetrical department has been out of the baby delivery business temporarily since December 2014. The hospital began redirecting obstetrical patients to other area hospitals, primarily Milton District Hos- pital, due to a physician vacancy and the fact Dr. Sel- varatnam Gunaratnum, the hospital's only obstetri- cian, went on a medical leave in December. Halton Healthcare Services spokesperson Paul Mc- Ivor said Gunaratnum is recuperating with the inten- tion of resuming his clinical duties, but it's unknown when. Since the workload is too high for a single doctor the hospital is looking for two obstetricians so obstet- rics can be restored. "We have been actively recruiting suitable candi- dates for the two obstetrician positions," said Dr. Justin Busse, Associate Chief of Staff. "We have interviewed several potential candidates and are optimistic that this will lead to us hiring two excellent clinicians to join the Hospital." "While we do not have a firm date (when obstetri- cal service would be reinstated) we expect to establish a realistic timeline for resuming obstetrical activities at Georgetown Hospital," said McIvor. He added there had been no layoffs in the depart- ment and staff members have been reassigned to oth- er duties. "We're currently using the obstetrical unit for medi- cal and surgical patients; staff from the unit continue to provide patient care service to patients," said McIvor. Hospital's baby dept. closed until two obstetricians can be hired By Lisa Tallyn ltallyn@theifp.ca Continued on page 8 BIRTHDAY BOY: Charles (Jimmy) Valantine, a lifelong Georgetown resident, who now lives at Halton Hills Extendicare, celebrated his 100th birthday with his wife Ruth, family and friends Tuesday afternoon. Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong dropped by the party as well. Valantine worked at Provincial Paper Mill for many years until retirement and was a volunteer firefighter with the Georgetown Fire De- partment for more than 40 years. He is the last surviving member of The Lorne Rifles (Scottish), which he joined in 1935. He continued his military career with The Lorne Scots from 1936 to 1946. His memories of his regimental career are quite vivid and he recalls the Drum Head Service in 1936 and played with Pipes and Drums for the King George V and Queen Elizabeth when they visited Canada in 1939. He's also a life member of Lt. Col. G.B.S. Cousens, MC Branch #120 The Royal Canadian Legion Georgetown. Valantine said his many years of riding motorcycles is the secret to his long life.
