COMMUNITY The Holy Cow Canoe Company recently re-opened its seasonal second location in Prospect Park, which gives the Acton community easy access to rent canoes, kayaks, and other equipment rowing right on Fairy Lake. Holy Cow's Fairy Lake location is open from Friday to Sunday, noon to 8 p.m., and will run until Labour Day, weather permitting. In addition to the rental ser- vice, Holy Cow also provides all essential safety equipment and instruction for new paddlers or people looking to improve their skills. "We're offering classes for youth," said Naomi McQuade, artistic and media director with Holy Cow. "We're offering classes for se- niors, as well as the disabled, be- cause the instructor that I have has experience with disabled paddlers." This is the second year Holy Cow has offered its canoe rental service on Fairy Lake after the Town gave the company permis- sion to use the boathouse there. The company has made some adjustments for the 2015 season, including the option for people to rent a popular new stand-up paddleboard watercraft. "For the last four or five years, stand-up paddleboards have been the new craze," McQuade said. "Here in Ontario, where we have so much standing wa- ter around us, stand-up paddle boards are like the new surfing." Also new for 2015, Holy Cow is offering the option for people to learn how to become canoe- ing instructors, and full-season passes for those planning on get- ting out on the lake several times this summer. Holy Cow has also modified its operating hours to Fridays and weekends only, whereas in 2014 they were open on weekdays dur- ing the days and evenings as well. "We would like to be to be open all summer, but if there's nobody visiting the lake during the day it's not feasible," McQuade said. Holy Cow's management staff is keen to see the impact the changed hours will have on busi- ness, but they also believe more and improved signage would help increase people's awareness of Fairy Lake, and bring more people into the waterfront community. "We had lots of people who had no idea Fairy Lake was even there," said Gulam Baloch, Holy Cow's general manager, talking about the company's 2014 experi- ence. "Even coming in from Mil- ton and the surrounding areas." "I think that Prospect Park could actually be a lot more popular if people knew about it," Baloch went on to say, comparing Prospect Park to the more widely known Kelso Conservation Area. "There could be a lot more com- munity events and rentals there, because it's quite a nice park. Another benefit is that you don't even have to pay to get in. There's a fee at Kelso even to get in." Prices start at $20 for an hour, $40 for two and a half hours, and customers can add an additional half hour for $10. You can also keep a boat to yourself for the en- tire day for $60. For more information you can visit Holy Cow's website at holy- cowcanoe.com/2014, call them at 519-853-9729, or visit them sometime this summer at their Prospect Park location, or where they make the canoes themselves at 12590 Regional Road 25.
