He was accom- panied by Wellington-Halton Hills Liberal candi- date Don Trant. Peter Wallace, VP Marketing & Development of Green-Port Environmental took the duo on a short tour of the building on Todd Rd. Green-Port provides a full range of environmental services in- cluding scrap transformer and oil recycling, PCB disposal services, site remediation and hazard- ous and non-hazardous waste disposal. For more about the company go to www.green-port.com McKay and Trant then joined environmental leaders from the Wellington-Halton Hills riding for a roundtable discussion at the Limehouse Town Hall. Attendees included members of the Halton Hills POWER group (Protect Our Water and Environmental Resources), Save Our Ravines, Concerned Residents Coalition of Rockwood, and the Citizens' Climate Lobby of Erin. McKay outlined the recently announced Liberal plan "Real Change for the Environment and the Economy", including action on climate change. "We have serious targets and plan to achieve them", he said. Trant said what pushed him to run was his embarrassment at Canada's lack of commitment to green energy and the environment. "Tying the economy to the opportunities just waiting to be tapped in green energy and the en- vironment is the only sensible approach", he said. "It is not just something I'd like to push … it is something that must be pushed!" Doug Tripp of Concerned Residents Coali- tion, Rockwood, agreed saying "marrying the en- vironment and the economy, and viewing it as an opportunity, is the only way" while Liz Armstrong of Citizen's Climate Lobby said she was ashamed that Canada is listed as #57 in the world for cli- mate change initiatives. Photo by Eamonn Maher Federal government to renovate Georgetown Armoury The Georgetown Armoury received a funding grant of more than $600,000 on Thursday to re- place the roof of the main building and provide upgrades to the lighting and the heating, ventila- tion and air conditioning systems of the Todd Rd. facilities. Michael Chong, Member of Parliament for Wellington-Halton Hills, made the announce- ment that will result in significant repairs to the Col. J.R. Barber Armoury, which is home of the Halton Company of the Lorne Scots Infrantry Regiment. "Ensuring that Canada's military installations are in a state of good repair is important," said Chong on behalf of Hon. Julian Fantino, Associ- ate Minister of National Defence, who was un- able to attend the announcement. "The funding announced today will allow the Lorne Scots to continue to operate at the highest levels of opera- tional readiness and excellence that the Canadian Armed Forces are known for, both at home and abroad." Members of the Lorne Scots have distin- guished themselves in war and in peace, defend- ing Canada and its values. Mobilized early during the Second World War, platoons of Lornes took part in significant battles, where they fought in the Raid on Dieppe and the capture of Boulogne-Sur- Mer with the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada. Since then, the Lorne Scots have made valu- able contributions to peacekeeping missions in Cyprus, Cambodia, Croatia and Bosnia. More recently, nearly 25 per cent of the unit was deployed to Afghanistan. "As Canadians, we owe a great deal to the men and women in uniform that fought bravely to keep Canada strong and free," added Chong. "Over the years, the Halton Company of the Lorne Scots Infantry Regiment has played an im- portant role in defending Canada's values of de- mocracy, liberty and the rule of law." The Georgetown Armoury refurbishment is part of the federal government's $452-million in- frastructure fund to repair and upgrade military facilities across Canada, which is expected to create approximately 10,000 jobs and spark eco- nomic growth in the communities where these facilities are located.
