The second rink at the Queen St. facility is slated to open on Nov. 30. Photo by Eamonn Maher Construction on the twinning of the Acton Arena reached a milestone Friday as the concrete was poured for the new NHL-size arena floor. A company from the Waterloo area, Tri Con Haid Concrete Finishing, carried out the job using laser-guided machines to ensure the floor is level. A structure of soil, sand, foam, rebar and va- pour barrier makes up the foundation of the floor, along with enough piping to stretch from Acton to Georgetown-- about 15 km-- and 40 truckloads of concrete. But the only number most ice sports enthu- siasts in Halton Hills are interested in hearing is the date the second pad is set to open, which is Monday, Nov. 30. "(Friday) was a big day because a lot of things had to be completed before the floor was poured, so we're about 70 per cent done," said John Ar- chibald, facility capital projects supervisor for the Town of Halton Hills. "It will take 28 days for the floor to cure, so they'll be putting the finishing touches on a few other things. The cold winter put us behind a little, bit but we're right on schedule now." The new rink will lie perpendicular to the ex- isting ice surface and has a separate entrance from the older rink, with six dressing rooms, two referee rooms and a community meeting area. The same firm that oversaw the double- rink expansion of Georgetown's Mold-Masters SportsPlex, Melloul-Blamey, is managing the twinning of the Acton Arena. The total cost of the second rink, along with the adjacent skatepark, is pegged at $12.54 million. Inquiries have already started to be made to the Town's Recreation & Parks about available ice times and the schedule is filling up quickly, Archibald said. Milestone reached in construction of the Acton Arena twinning Town to rebury time capsule Twenty-six years ago, to mark the opening of the Halton Hills Civic Centre, a time capsule was bur- ied in front of the council chambers, and next week that time capsule, which had been opened on its 25th anniversary last year, will be re-interred-- with some additions. The time capsule, which contained pictures, news articles, planning documents and even a bottle of rye whiskey with the instructions to "Have a drink on us." The items were put on display throughout the Civic Centre, past employees council members, guests and donors from the original opening were invited to come and view this interesting past his- tory. It was decided that some of the original con- tents be returned to the capsule along with new items representing 2014. The capsule will be once again placed in the original site with instructions for the next generation to open the capsule in 2039. The items to be added include current pictures of Council, community events, newspapers even a Blackberry. Also to be included will be the original bottle of Canadian rye whiskey with similar in- structions to enjoy a libation courtesy of the 1989 Civic Centre opening committee. The time capsule will be re-interred on Aug. 27 at 1:30 p.m.-- the original stone top will be placed over the capsule and a new brass plate will be in- stalled to reference the new opening date in 2039.
