II Roberts Wesleyan Georgetown's Cody Menzies has earned a scholarship to play field lacrosse at an NCAA Division II school in Rochester, N.Y., where he'll major in education in the four-year pro- gram. Menzies, who turns 19 next month, has al- ready begun classes at Roberts Wesleyan Col- lege and will play for the Redhawks varsity field squad in the new year. He had considered a couple of Canadian universities, Trent and Nipissing, but took two visits to the New York school and was im- pressed with the total package that was offered. "I really like that it's a small school with small class sizes so it will give me more time with my professors and teachers," said the Christ the King Secondary School grad. "The lacrosse team also carries a small ros- ter, so I'll have a chance to play right away and impact the team." Menzies returned to CtK for a fifth year to upgrade his marks for some of his courses and credited that decision in helping attain the grades to be accepted into Roberts Wesleyan and have his tuition paid for. On the field, Menzies was one of the Jag- uars' top scorers and primarily plays the attack- man role, although the right-handed shooter was named the 2014 Ontario Jr. Men's Field Lacrosse League Midfielder of the Year for his club team, Brampton-based Northern Lacrosse. In the box game, Menzies played for the Halton Hills Jr. B Bulldogs in 2013 but was part of a major trade with the Guelph Regals and ended up with the Brampton Jr. B Excel- siors this year, in which he was second in team scoring with 31 goals and 60 points. He hopes to return to the Bulldogs next season. NOTES: Acton native Sandy Chapman has re-signed for another two years on the back line of the NLL's Toronto Rock. The 34-year- old Chapman is a veteran of 13 NLL seasons, was named the NLL's Defender of the Year in 2010 and has won five Champion's Cups, four of which came with the Rock…Travis Bland of Georgetown is in St. Catharines this week as a member of the Ontario-champion Six Na- tions Rivermen playing in the President's Cup Canadian men's Sr. B box lacrosse champion- ships…The Halton Hills Jr. C Bulldogs won a couple of recently announced league awards, including Defensive Player of the Year for Quinn Harding and the Coaching Staff of the Year, consisting of former Jr. B Bulldogs Ethan O'Connor as head coach and Dylan Gilbert as an assistant, along with trainers Em- ily Coleman and Andrew Groombridge. The Ontario Junior Hockey League's regular season starts earlier than ever before this year and the Georgetown Raiders will jump right into the fray with three home games in the first week of the schedule. Due to the addition of another showcase weekend for scouts in January, the schedule be- gins a week sooner than usual for 2015-16, with a few teams dropping the puck on the new cam- paign on the Labour Day weekend. The Raiders open up at home Saturday against their former division rivals, the Oakville Blades, at the Alcott Arena at 7:30 p.m. with a revamped roster after many players veteran-laden lineup moved on from the squad that finished atop the West Conference standings in the regular season, but was eliminated in the second round of play- offs in a sweep by the Toronto Jr. Canadiens. Head coach & GM Greg Walters has brought in several highly regarded rookies and acquisi- tions from Jr. B clubs, with some roster spots still up for grabs heading into Wednesday evening's pre-season finale in Port Credit against the Mis- sissauga Chargers. So far in the exhibition schedule, Georgetown has two wins and a 4-3 overtime loss to Oakville last Friday. Eddie Schulz, Andrew Court and Daniel Har- die scored against the Blades and defenceman Matt Cairns, picked up in a trade with the Toronto Jr. Patriots this past week, had two assists. On Saturday night, the Raiders downed the visiting Chargers 6-0 on goals by Matthew Thom, Lucas Goodman, Court, Brendan Jacome, Josh Dickinson and Matthew Pyz. Netminders An- drew Masters and Billy Day shared the shutout. Cody Menzies has played for Northern Lacrosse club field program out of Brampton the past couple of years and the local native has secured a scholarship to attend Division II Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, N.Y. Representing Team Ontario, Paratholil finished third in the masters (40+) category and was fourth out of a dozen entrants in the lightweight division (154 lbs. & under) despite usually competing in the bantam- weight class (144 lbs. & under). Last year, Paratholil won the men's lightweight class and was second among the masters' group at the nationals in Win- nipeg to qualify for the world championships in Brazil, but he did not attend. "This year I expected the competition in Toronto to be much greater with more local athletes competing," said the Region of Peel human resources manager, who trains at LA Fitness in Milton. "I was very pleased with the results based on the number of athletes and quality of their physiques, in addi- tion to competing in a higher weight class. Everyone was in great shape and worked hard to be on the national stage." Paratholil said he's already begun training for the 2016 CBBF Nationals, to be held at a yet-to-be-determined location.
