It's been a real priority for our church." Thompson said that the national body of the Anglican Church turned over all of its substantial records re- lating to the operation of residential schools and continues to re- ceive information from the descendants of resi- dential school children in hopes of finding out anything more about those who didn't return home. During its lifespan, the TRC collected thousands of documents and statements from 238 hearings in 77 Canadian com- munities. Its mandate was officially slated to end on June 30, but the commissioners have asked for an extension to Dec. 31 to complete the report, which is already at 382 pages and growing.  "I have heard that many of the remain- ing 70,000 to 80,000 survivors of residen- tial schools have been encouraged by the TRC's recommendations and the com- missioners themselves state that a very good piece of work has been done," Thompson said. "Has everything been done? Of course it hasn't. But as a friend of mine told me, 'There are aboriginal people from residen- tial schools across the country who are now just coming to terms with the experiences that they had over six years.' "A lot of survivors had the opportunity to tell their stories that have now been documented and these will be stored in that National Centre for the TRC that's been established at the University of Manitoba." Continued from page 3 Truth and Reconciliation Commission to complete report by Dec. 31 'I have heard that many of the remaining 70,000 to 80,000 survivors of residential schools have been encouraged by the TRC's recommendations...' - Henriette Thompson, TRC member -
