K.C. Burnell and Sarah Laurie account- ed for all of the Rebels' goal scoring in their 5-0 triumph, breaking open a close game with a strong second half. Photo by Eamonn Maher Cregan shines for Ireland The Republic of Ireland had its best-ever result at last week's 2015 World Indoor La- crosse Championships in Syracuse, N.Y. and Georgetown's Mike Cregan turned in an all- star performance as the team's goalie. Ireland finished sixth in the 13-team tour- nament, losing 14-12 to England in the fifth- place game on Saturday. Their previous best standing was seventh in 2011. This is the 26-year-old Cregan's third ap- pearance for Ireland at the World Champion- ships and said he was encouraged by the skill development shown by some of the younger players on the squad, which included a 14-13 upset victory over the Czech Republic. But a lack of experience and fiery tempers often lead to the Irish team's undoing. "We wear our hearts on our sleeves some- times and it gets a little chippy," said the for- mer Halton Hills Jr. B Bulldog and Peterbor- ough Jr. A Lakers' draft pick, who faced 230 shots over six games, including 80 in a 22-2 loss to the U.S. in the quarterfinals. "It's great to see how far along Ireland lacrosse has actually come. We have some field guys who don't really know the box game yet, so we get a lot of slashing and holding penalties, but beating the Czechs was a big moment for us." Led offensively by Na- tional Lacrosse League veteran Stephen Keogh of the Rochester Knight- hawks, the Irish went 3-2 in the preliminary round, with both losses coming against surprise semifi- nalist Israel. Cregan was selected as the recipient of the FIL WILC President's Team Goaltender Award, an all-star lineup con- sisting of the best players outside of the Tier I division. Canada won the gold medal with a 12-8 win against the host Iroquois Nationals in the final for the fourth straight time. Bulldogs popular at NLL Draft Three players-- past and present-- from the Halton Hills Jr. B Bulldogs were selected at Monday night's National Lacrosse League 2015 Draft, held at the Toronto Rock Ath- letic Centre in Oakville. Georgetown's Mike MacDonald was the first to go, taken by the New England Black Wolves in the third round, 22nd overall, just before another prolific scorer in the history of the Bulldogs, Connor Brown, went to the Vancouver Stealth with the 23rd pick. The Princeton University  star MacDon- ald, now 22, played pro field lacrosse this summer with Rochester and resides in New York. He was a rookie with the Halton Hills Founders Cup Canadian Jr. B champion- ship team in 2010 and helped propel the Whitby Jr. A Warriors to the 2013 Minto Cup. Brown, 20, holds the Bulldogs' season goal-scoring record with 64 goals in 2013 and after a year with Orangeville Jr. A, the overage captain of the Ontario Hockey League's Saginaw Spirit notched 51 goals and 115 points this spring and summer with his hometown 'Dogs. Outgoing Halton Hills captain Jamie Bat- ten, a 21-year-old defender from Caledon who played five seasons with the Bulldogs, was selected by the Toronto Rock in the sixth round, 53rd overall. None of the above-mentioned players was able to attend Monday's draft. Raiders rebound from first loss with victory in Milton The Georgetown Raiders began a string of eight straight games away from home with a 2-1 record last week in Ontario Junior Hockey League play. At the Governors Showcase event in Buf- falo, the Raiders broke open a close game against Stouffville with three goals in a 1:17 span early in the third period on their way to a 5-2 win. Michael Boushy, Zack Dybowski, Jake Payette, Josh Dickinson and Matthew Cairns scored for Georgetown. The Raiders suffered their first loss of the season last Thursday at the Showcase after the Lindsay Muskies skated to a 3-0 victory despite being outshot 28-24. Rookie Jack Jacome scored twice Friday in Milton as the Raiders downed the Ice- Hawks 4-1. Daniel Hardie and Liam Win- slow also tallied for the visitors. Up next for 5-1-1 Georgetown are road dates with the Lindsay Muskies Friday evening and in Orangeville Saturday night against the 5-1-1 Flyers. The Raiders' next home game is on Sat- urday, Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. against the Buf- falo Jr. Sabres. In other news, two current and two for- mer Raiders are listed in the NHL Central Scouting Bureau's September Watch List for the league's 2016 Draft in Buffalo in June. Defencemen Matthew Cairns and Mat- thew Thom from the 2015-16 edition of the club were selected, along with ex-Raiders Adam Mascherin of the OHL's Kitchener Rangers and goalie Jack Lafontaine, who has moved on to Janesville, Wisconsin of the North American Hockey League.
