The Town of Halton Hills wants to ensure that all residents are safe, es- pecially when they are enjoying the comforts of their own home. Specific rules are in place that are designed to protect people who live in two-unit dwellings. A two-unit dwelling is a single- family home that has been convert- ed into two separate units or apart- ments. Typically the second ac- cessory unit is in the base- ment, but other configura- tions are possible. It's important that all two-unit dwellings are properly inspected and registered with the Town. The Halton Hills Fire De- partment recently attend- ed a house fire that poten- tially could have spread into an illegal basement apartment, putting the health and safety of the occupants in danger. A home with multiple units that is properly inspected and registered ensures the structure meets all applicable codes and by- laws making the home safe from a structural, health and fire safety per- spective. This protects not only the tenants, but the building owner as well. For the tenants, they are assured that the residence they live in is safe and the building owner is protected knowing they are providing a safe environment that is also an insurable property. Anyone interested in a new two- unit conversion or registering an ex- isting two-unit dwelling can follow the Town's simple process. You can find details at: http:// www.haltonhills.ca/faq/FAQ-topics. php?topic=44. If you are an owner or tenant and want to ensure that your unit(s) is properly registered, please contact the Town's Planning and Infrastruc- ture Services department: 905-873- 2601, ext. 2960. **** Congratulations to Mike Albano on being elected as Councillor for Ward 1 and thank you to all the can- didates for running in the byelection. **** Please join myself and councillors on Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. to celebrate the re-opening of the 3 Musketears Skate- park. It was the home of John Roaf Barber, owner of one of the largest stationery manufacturers and suppliers in Cana- da. It was named Berwick Hall after the birthplace of his mother. The Barber family moved out in 1918, and it sat idle for many years-- becom- ing known as a "haunted house" for a generation of children. But in 1945, the owner of the Dominion Seed House bought it and converted it into apart- ments, which remains its use today. Text courtesy of John McDonald, Halton Sketches Revisited.
