Cakes ready to go! Cakes ready to go! Cakes made to order ! Cakes made to order ! We Canadians don't overdo the Thanksgiving thing, do we? There are no big shopping bonanzas, no big balloon parades, and no black hatted pilgrims at the table. There's just crisp fall weather, an abundance of colour on the trees, and maybe some turkey 'n stuffing. Here are some of the things we all love to do on this low-glitz long weekend. Visit the farmers' market. It won't be long until it closes for the winter, so now is the time to catch the fall harvest. Cultivators and producers are offering up their finest locally grown vegetables, butchered meats, cheeses, preserves, and fall fruit. Go for a walk. Do you remember that childhood sound of walking to school on the sidewalks, scuffing leaves with your feet as you go? Recapture some of the thrill of a leaf fight with a loved one as you stroll through the neighbourhood or on a path through the woods. Go for a drive in the country. In the U.S., people travel en masse to the northern states to see the colourful fall leaves. We shouldn't ignore our own bounty! Go for a drive and feast your eyes on the hillsides filled with reds, yellows, and oranges. Winterize the house. This is the DIY guy or gal's dream weekend. Put the patio furniture away, store the lawn mower, and put up the Christmas lights (why not do it while it's still above zero?). Eat (the all-time winner, hands down). On the menu? Hot pureed soups, stews, roasted fowl, and fall- harvested vegetables. Need we say more?
