NEWS A second public meeting on a seniors' residence proposed for the former Holy Cross Church prop- erty once again drew no concerns or comments from the public. The session was held during Monday night's council meeting regarding the plans from Rock- port Group to build a seven-storey, 147-suite build- ing on the Maple Ave. lands-- an increase from the original proposal for a six-storey, 120-suite facility. The additional suites will double the number of assisted living units from the original 27 to 54. The 119,653-square-foot building would also house 66 independent living suites and 27 memory care units. None of the units will have full kitchens as all residents are expected to have their meals in the building's dining room. There are to be 42 above ground and 31 under- ground parking spaces. The latter is actually a re- duction from the original 32 underground spots to facilitate two barrier-free parking spaces. Rockport Group's planning consultant, Glenn Wellings, told council that the proposed appear- ance and setbacks of the building remain un- changed from the original plans. "The height (of the building) does still fit with the low-lying nature of the property," he noted. He added that redeveloping the site will result in positive environmental gains as storm water controls will be put in place. "Right now storm water sheets off the property into the creek," he said. Some of the existing parking lot on the site will be removed, with those areas being naturalized with plant material to contribute to the form and function of the Silver Creek Valley system. While nobody spoke at the meeting, the Town has previ- ously received an email from a resident suggesting a pedestrian bridge be built over the Silver Creek Valley to connect the site to downtown George- town and make the area more walkable for elderly residents. The majority of the site is designated Major Institutional Area and zoned Institutional, both of which don't allow a seniors' residence. The ap- plication calls for a change to High Density Resi- dential OP designation and zoning to allow for the facility. Town staff is continuing to review the application and will bring a report and recom- mendation to approve or deny the plans to a future council meeting.
