Let us host your holiday events SPORTS The Georgetown Raiders let a solid road ef- fort go to waste Sunday night against one of the Ontario Junior Hockey League's best clubs after surrendering a late goal against the Toronto Jr. Canadiens in a 3-2 defeat. First-period goals by Elliot Ashur and Arran MacDonald put the Raiders in con- trol, by the Jr. Canadiens, who eliminated Georgetown from the playoffs last season, chipped away at the lead and netted the winner with just over a minute remaining in the third period. On Saturday night, the Raiders trailed the last-place Milton IceHawks 2-1 after the opening frame before rallying for a 5-3 victory, led by pair of goals by defenceman Matthew Cairns. Bailey Molella, Brendan Jacome and leading scorer Daniel Hardie into an empty net also tallied for the home side, which outshot Milton 44-23. The 13-6-2-0 Raiders hosted the Orangeville Flyers Wednesday evening and travel to Newmarket to face the Hurricanes Thursday night. Royal welcome for Davis & pony Loyal readers of the Independent & Free Press may recall an article published in January of 2010 about a Brampton man who brought more than 100 quarter horses to this area from North and South Dakota that otherwise would have been destined for the slaughter- house. One of those scrawny, bedraggled po- nies, covered in ringworm and mud rot, was nursed back to health by local resident Nata- lie Palmer and has become the powerful show-jumping partner of Georgetown teen Kaitlin Davis. Davis will ride 'Aaleyah,' which means 'the greatest gift from God' in Arabic, this Friday at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto during a special 45-minute clinic in the President's Choice Animal Theatre. For Davis, a Grade 10 student at George- town District High School, this will be her first time appearing at the Royal Winter Fair and she hopes to return next year to jump with seven-year-old Aaleyah (known as Bold Ambition) as a competitor. A strong contingent from Gosling Stables of Hillsburgh, where Davis trains, is expected to attend the Royal Friday night. In order to earn one of three spots in the Hyde Moffatt Clinic, to be conducted by the renowned equestrian rider/trainer, Davis finished first in equitation over fences and third in the large pony hunters category at the Georgian Bay zone qualifier this sum- mer and then placed second in hunters over fences at the Trillium Championships held at the Caledon Equestrian Centre in Pal- grave. Fifteen-year-old Kaitlin Davis is set for the ride of her life with well-traveled pony Aaleyah this Friday at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. The duo will participate in the Hyde Moffatt Clinic Friday evening in the President's Choice Animal Theatre.
