The fire was apparently discov- ered and first battled by co-work- ers of Trevor McNally who were paying a visit to the residence. The couple had two dogs, he said. Both were uninjured in the fire. Town of Halton Hills' Mayor Rick Bonnette confirmed Satur- day that Trevor McNally was a member of the Halton Hills Fire Department. The flags are being flown at half-mast at the three fire detachments in Halton Hills. Tony Iavarone, manager of corporate communications for the Town of Halton Hills, said the community is in mourning at the loss of these two individuals. Trevor McNally first joined the fire department as a part-time firefighter in 2005 and then was hired full time in 2007. He worked out of the Acton detachment. On Friday morning, a few members from his detachment went to visit him to follow up on a few work-related items, Iavarone said. When they arrived, they saw smoke coming from the home and immediately took action to contain the fire. "The house sustained some damage, but it's certainly not too bad," Iavarone said, adding most of the damage was contained in- side the home. McNally was a friendly man who loved his job, he said. "He was a little bit quiet, but he was a well-liked member of the department." Along with his colleagues, Mc- Nally participated in several fund- raisers in the community, includ- ing the Santa Claus event. Employees at a Hamilton law firm are reeling after the unex- pected loss of their "anchor," co- worker Susanne Nesbitt-McNally, 45, a legal assistant. Known by colleagues as Sue, she led a team of law clerks at Gowlings where she worked for 10 years. "This has all hit us very hard," said Mark Tamminga, a partner at the law firm's Hamilton office. Tamminga said the office learned of Nesbitt-McNally's death just before noon Friday. While they were given the op- portunity to go home, most col- leagues stayed at the office to share in their grief with one an- other and share a meal, he added. Professionally, colleagues will remember Nesbitt-McNally, 45, as someone with "so much knowledge" who made learning easy. Personally, she will be remem- bered as the type of person who always put others before herself and told the people she loved how much she loved them, he said. Nesbitt-McNally's team re- called to Tamminga how thought- ful and kind Sue was, along with noting her love for dogs, travelling and shopping-- for especially shoes. She was dependable-- someone whom people felt com- fortable with-- and thrived as a mentor, Tamminga said. "She was just such an anchor person in this group," he said. In a statement, Brent Marshall, Halton Hills Town Chief Admin- istrative Officer (CAO) and Fire Chief, said, "The Halton Hills Fire Department and Town of Halton Hills are deeply saddened by the deaths of Trevor and Sue McNal- ly. We extend our deepest condo- lences to family and friends. As the OPP has not released details about the cause of death, it would not be appropriate for us to pro- vide any specific commentary. We are not going to address any speculation that may be circulat- ing around the circumstances of their deaths. Halton Hills Fire was very supportive, committed and involved in the health and well- being of Trevor and Sue. We join our community in wishing that they rest in peace." "Obviously, it's a very sad day," Iavarone said. "The guys are cop- ing as well as you'd expect, but there's definitely a lot of sadness, both with the fire department and the Town. "We're a small town so, when something like this happens, it af- fects us all." Iavarone said the Town is now waiting and trusting the outcome of the investigation. "We have the utmost faith in the OPP, that they're handling it in a way they feel they need to. So, we just sit and wait with everyone else and wait for the outcome." Police are asking anyone who may have information about the incident to contact Crime Stop- pers at 1-800-222-8477 or submit an anonymous tip online at csgw. tips.
