Halton Hills Council passed a motion to that effect Monday, joining other towns and cities across the country that have been asked to endorse such a resolution by the Associa- tion of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO). Local and Regional Councillor Jane Fogal presented the motion, which details a variety of measures the Town wants Wynne to take on the environmental front, including: • Giving municipalities adequate, stable and long-term funding to invest in public transit, water conservation, public and private building energy efficiency and other programs • Recognizing municipal projects that re- duce greenhouse gases for offset credits in cap and trade programs • Allocating funds for climate change adap- tation to help municipalities provide resilient infrastructure. With municipalities either directly or indi- rectly controlling about half of Canada's green- house gas emissions, it's vital to take steps such as these, said Fogal. "This is an extremely important area for investment," she said, noting the Town of Hal- ton Hills has already taken the issue seriously through a long list of initiatives. These include measures such as the Mayor's Community En- ergy Plan, active transportation projects and construction of efficient Town facilities. Fellow Local and Regional Councillor Clark Somerville asked for the motion to be circu- lated to AMO, Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong and the federal minister of the environment and climate change. "With the amount of work done in this community (on climate change) over the past 10 years, I think they should know what we're doing," Somerville said. Mayor Rick Bonnette noted that Halton Hills' climate change efforts "are on the map," with delegates from China coming to town seeking assistance on sustainability and envi- ronmental programs. "That's a tribute to everyone here," he said. "For a community of our size, we've taken this very seriously."
