Give DEKER a jingle. only one thing that beats NEWS Hwy. 7 traffic topic for MPP and MTO January meeting Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott has arranged a meet- ing with the Minister of Trans- portation, Steven Del Duca, on Jan. 20 to discuss the need for a long-term truck strategy in Hal- ton Hills, including the possibil- ity of an Acton bypass. Arnott approached the Minis- ter after Question Period on Dec. 3, asking to meet with him to dis- cuss the problem of truck traffic on Hwy. 7 through Halton Hills. "The need for a long-term truck strategy, including the possibility of an Acton Bypass, is strongly supported by Hal- ton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette and Town Council," Arnott told MPPs in a statement in the Leg- islature on Dec. 10. "I want to commend them for their leader- ship on this issue." The Minister was very recep- tive to the request and his staff responded to the local MPP's office within days, said the Wel- lington-Halton Hills MPP. "We have arranged a meet- ing for Jan. 20 at Queen's Park," Arnott said in the House. "I have invited Mayor Bonnette and Council to join us, as well as Hal- ton Regional Chair Gary Carr. I hope that the other Halton-area MPPs can attend as well." Many area residents believe an Acton bypass is badly needed due to the increasing volume of truck traffic making its way along Hwy. 7 through Acton's narrow downtown. There are also concerns in Georgetown and Norval. Earlier in the week, Arnott had also tabled a Private Mem- ber's Resolu- tion in the On- tario Legislature calling on the Minister of Transportation to prioritize an Acton Bypass by placing it on the Southern High- ways program, the Ministry's five-year plan for highway con- struction. He intends to make reference to the resolution in the months ahead to continue to highlight the issue. Arnott took action after re- ceiving notice of a Town of Hal- ton Hills resolution detailing the Town's concern with truck traffic and the need to partner with the MTO to study long-term alterna- tives, including placing an Acton bypass project on the Southern Highways Program.TED ARNOTT Drunk driving and vandalism has kept the Halton Regional Police on their toes.
