Smart Commute is a program of Metrolinx and the municipalities in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. The program helps com- muters explore and try alternative modes of transportation such as walking, cycling, transit and carpooling. Spence, the Town's Sustainability Outreach Officer, tied for the award. "I am pleased that one of our very own Town employees, Jennifer Spence, is a recipi- ent of the Smart Commute Champion Award from Metrolinx. Town Council and staff work hard to take sustainable actions that will im- prove our quality of life in Halton Hills today and in the future," said Mayor Rick Bonnette. With the support of Town Council and staff, Spence expanded the Program by: • Promoting carpooling, walking, biking and GO Transit when possible; • Ensuring additional carpool spaces and bike lockers at Town-owned facilities, parking lots and throughout the community; • Working with Halton Region staff, Town staff mem- bers and Councillor Jane Fogal to provide events such as the an- nual Noon Hour Bike Ride on Bike to Work Day for Town staff and residents; • Promoting the Program when pre- senting to local high school students about sustainability; and • Partnering with the Halton Hills Cham- ber of Commerce and Smart Commute Hal- ton to host a Mayor's breakfast event to engage large local businesses who are faced with ac- cessibility issues. This event showcased solu- tions on how to improve accessibility for their employees to their worksite through programs like Smart Commute.
